Batak Dance - The Offering on Flickr.Via Flickr:
Another scene from a Traditional Batak dance performance ( Tor-tor and Sigale-gale) at the Huta Bolon Village (Desa Huta Bolon), Simanindo, Samosir Island, North Sumatra.
There are eleven parts to the performance altogether, e.g. a ceremony for the gods, the sacrifice of a buffalo, a dance of women hoping to find a husband. At about ‘half time’, spectators are invited to join the dancers.

On my short trip to Samosir Island in North Sumatra last year, I had the opportunity to do a fashion shoot with Batak Fashion Designer Merdi Sihombing for his upcoming book on traditional Batak garments. Here’s a little teaser from the the sixth and last dress session that took place right at Lake Toba. I opted for a close-up black and white instead of the full body shots just because… :) Enjoy this last one. Hopefully the book will be out soon!
Designer: Merdi Sihombing
Make-up & Hair: Ozi Baru
Model: Irene Siboni
Light: Crazy me & my torchlight

On my short trip to Samosir Island in North Sumatra last year, I had the opportunity to do a fashion shoot with Batak Fashion Designer Merdi Sihombing for his upcoming book on traditional Batak garments. Here’s a little teaser from the the third dress session that took place at an awesome but very wet location, right inside the waterfall on Samosir Island! In fact so wet, that I had to wipe the lens after each shot…
